Kiln Building Workshop - 24th to 26th January
*Price per person

Serra da Lousã

Would you like to venture into ceramics, but don't know how or where to bake your pieces? In the Construction of Ceramic Ovens Workshop, Renato Costa e Silva and Kerstin Thomas explain how to build small rudimentary ovens that bake, with gas or wood, your pieces with great care. The course takes place in the Schist Village of Cerdeira, from the 24th to 26th January.

On the first day, you will make small pieces of ceramics with different pastes that best adapt to cooking in rudimentary ovens. Acquire knowledge about how ovens work so that you can cook safely afterwards. At the end of the third day, you can take the ceramic pieces out of the kiln, evaluate the firing processes and, of course, take them home.

Program:
. Creation of different ceramic pastes for different purposes;
. Construction and operation of a small rudimentary pottery kiln (paper kiln, wood-fired pipe kiln, and small gas kilns);
. Preparation of ceramic pieces for firing;
. Decoration with engobes and glazing.

Renato Costa e Silva e Kerstin Thomas
Host
Renato Costa e Silva e Kerstin Thomas
Renato Costa e Silva, ceramist and sculptor, has a vast CV not only in ceramics but also in large sculptures for public spaces in various materials.
He has studied clay and ceramic materials intensively and has extensive experience in preparing ceramic pastes and glazes. She lives and works between Angra do Heroísmo, where she was born, and Cerdeira.

Kerstin Thomas, a sculptor, studied Fine Arts and Woodcarving in her native Germany. Back in Portugal, she graduated in Portuguese Language and Culture from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra and also studied Social Sciences. With a preference for indigenous woods, he has developed sculpture work inspired by rural life and the expressiveness of the human face. The construction of the Forno sem Fumo (smokeless kiln) for firing high-temperature ceramics in 2015 sparked her interest in ceramics as a means of expression and, since then, she has intensified her learning of techniques and firing to realise her sculptures. Co-founder of the Cerdeira Home For Creativity project, she currently combines her artistic work with the project's artistic direction.
