Wood and Shino Cooking Course - 19 to 28 February
*Price per person

Serra da Lousã

The Wood Firing & Shino Course - Tableware and Kitchenware focuses on the production of utilitarian pieces and understanding the ceramic production process, from the creation and glazing of crockery to wood firing in the Sasukenei smokeless kiln.

For 10 days, participants will perfect their knowledge of the ceramic process, joining a small group in a cosy, collaborative environment, guided by Álvaro Villamañan and Barry Krzywicki.

They will create pots, mugs, jugs, large and small bowls, through intensive practice guided step by step by the trainers, using the potter's wheel and manual techniques. This learning enables you to develop technical skills for creating functional and aesthetic ceramics.

The course also explores advanced decorative techniques, such as leather decoration, inlay, and sgraffito, to create unique and intrinsic details on the pieces. In addition, the application of Shino glazes is covered, using three different recipes and providing an in-depth understanding of glaze layers and their applications.

Finally, participants experience a traditional firing technique that gives each piece a unique character. They learn how to hang and how to position each piece to emphasise its decoration and the glaze used.

Programme:
Production of utilitarian pieces (mugs, jugs, bowls and other cups):
Intensive training on the potter's wheel;
Preparation of handles and other additions to the pieces;

Barry Krzywicki e  Álvaro Villamañán
Host
Barry Krzywicki e Álvaro Villamañán
Barry Krzywicki fell in love with ceramics more than 40 years ago. He has led guided tours in Spain, given classes and lectures, researched the Spanish tradition of Lusterware and Majolica and taken part in artist residencies in various countries.

Álvaro Villamañán discovered ceramics at the age of 21 by chance. His pieces focus on 3 styles: Kohiki or Buncheong, producing utilitarian pieces; Shino ceramics, aimed at pieces in warm tones; and Anagama-fired ceramics, more artistic and free.

This duo has come together in Cerdeira to share their passion for ceramic production.
