In her approach, figurative or abstract, she explores themes that express her vision and values as a human being. In her work, we always find carved wood associated with old and used materials like wood or iron, objects with their beauty and history to add.
Wood is a warm material, pleasant to work with, alive, and a direct connection to nature. As a raw material, it is a challenge with a need for special attention in the whole process, from drying to finishing. Working with wood is a continuous dialogue with the material, respecting its unique characteristics to achieve our desired result. To her vision of resource sustainability, Kerstin prefers to work with wood from fallen trees or leftovers from the sawmill.
In the Woodcarving Course, you’ll learn to handle hand tools like bundles and chisels to make your sculpture. We also introduce you to the work with chainsaws and power tools, proposing diverse carving techniques to give form to your final work.

He has studied clay and ceramic materials intensively and has extensive experience in preparing ceramic pastes and glazes. She lives and works between Angra do Heroísmo, where she was born, and Cerdeira.
Kerstin Thomas, a sculptor, studied Fine Arts and Woodcarving in her native Germany. Back in Portugal, she graduated in Portuguese Language and Culture from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra and also studied Social Sciences. With a preference for indigenous woods, he has developed sculpture work inspired by rural life and the expressiveness of the human face. The construction of the Forno sem Fumo (smokeless kiln) for firing high-temperature ceramics in 2015 sparked her interest in ceramics as a means of expression and, since then, she has intensified her learning of techniques and firing to realise her sculptures. Co-founder of the Cerdeira Home For Creativity project, she currently combines her artistic work with the project's artistic direction.
