From 20 to 26 November, Tim Andrews, one of the great names in Raku in the West, is in Cerdeira to share his in-depth knowledge of this exciting process.
The artist has dedicated his career to testing boundaries, combining traditional techniques with innovative methods. His works are recognised for their unique surfaces, which feature complex textures and patterns that emerge from the dynamic interaction between heat, glaze and smoke.
In the RAKU - From Clay to Fire course, Tim combines two passions, ceramics and teaching. Whilst sharing his technical and artistic knowledge, he encourages participants to experiment and discover their own language.
Throughout this journey of exploration and expression, the process is shown to be as important as the final piece, allowing the unpredictability of firing to reveal beauty and unexpected forms.
The first part of the course will focus on creating pieces using the potter's wheel or manual techniques. After an initial chacota firing, participants will glaze, decorate and prepare their pieces for Raku firing. At this point, Tim's unique method of using ‘resist slip’ (or Naked Raku) stands out, a technique that creates unpredictable effects on the surface of the pieces, allowing the smoke to penetrate the cracks in the piece and leave marks that make each piece unique.
This 7-day course offers an immersive hands-on experience to create and experiment with the possibilities of this technique, regardless of each participant's experience. The number of pieces completed varies depending on the firing time and their size, but each participant is expected to finish around 6 pieces in the Raku kiln.

His journey began in 1978, when he became an apprentice in David Leach's studio. He then spent two years at the Dartington Pottery Training Workshop, where he worked as an artist and teacher, focusing on ceramic decoration techniques. Later, he started an international ceramics summer school, which attracted students from all over the world.
In 1986, he shared a studio with David Leach in Bovey Tracey until 1993, which marked the foundation of his studio and gallery in Devon, where he remains.
Over the years, Tim has been invited to lecture at various institutions, from universities to art centres around the world. His work is exhibited worldwide, in public and private collections. In addition to his practical experience, Tim is also the author of two books on ‘Raku’, published by A&C Black and Bloomsbury, and has curated several exhibitions.
